Stem Cell Transplant Program Achieves National Re-Accreditation 06/29/2006
Our Lady of the Lake
Cancer Center and Our Lady of the Lake Blood Bank’s Stem Cell Transplant Program
earned a three year re-accreditation from the Foundation for the Accreditation
of Cellular Therapy (FACT). OLOL is the only FACT accredited transplant program
in the state of Louisiana.
The Lake’s stem cell transplant program first obtained FACT accreditation
status eight years ago. Over the last 10 years, 118 transplants have been
provided to 99 patients at OLOL. Stem cell transplantation is a procedure that
restores stem cells that were destroyed by high doses of chemotherapy and/or
radiation. A variety of malignant conditions have been successfully treated with
stem cell transplant.
Organizations who have earned the FACT accreditation have demonstrated
excellence in quality management including quality audits, documentation, review
and reporting and safety. FACT accredited facilities must also have in place a
system for detecting, evaluation and reporting errors, accidents and suspected
reactions.
FACT has established standards for the provision of quality medical and
laboratory practice in stem cell transplantation; conducts inspections, and
accredits programs that will encourage health institutions and facilities
performing stem cell transplantation to voluntarily meet these standards; and
recognizes compliance with standards by issuance of Certificates of
Accreditation. More
