Patients at each of the hospitals in the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System now have convenient 24/7 access to their personal health information from anywhere they have an Internet connection.
These Online Patient Centers allow patients access to information about recent hospital visits, view test results, message with their care team, schedule certain appointments, view their health record and even pay their hospital bills online.
The Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System developed this online tool that allows patients to be partners in their health and more involved in their care. The secure, user friendly, web-based tool helps patients to manage their own patient record, resulting in a better patient experience and improved patient outcomes.
The Online Patient Center is safe and secure. Users are verified during an inpatient or Emergency Room encounter before given a personal identification number (PIN) to access to their medical health record. Access to information is controlled through the secure PIN, personal username and password. Unlike conventional email, all online patient center messaging is done while patients are securely logged on to the system.
Researchers have found that patient portals are enhancing the connectivity between patients and their care teams, thus allowing the patients to make better health decisions.
Kaiser Permanente was one of the first health systems to launch a patient portal. They found patients liked features that allow for refilling prescriptions and scheduling appointments. As other features were added (online test results and ability to email one’s doctor), patients embraced them, too.
These centers are now online at the Heart Hospital of Lafayette, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of the Lake, St. Elizabeth and St. Francis.
